Thrills, Spills And Surprises in the Horse Grand Prix

Well it was a class of thrills, spills and plenty of surprises, and the packed crowd along to watch the Dunstan EquiFibre and GH Mumm Horse Grand Prix at the Equidays night show this evening certainly won’t go home disappointed.

Twenty riders started the class, taking on a tough 1.40 – 1.50m track, but the night belonged to 22-year-old Rose Alfeld and My Super Nova, all the way from the South Island, for just their second start of the season.

The first of ten riders to come back for the second round, Rose carried eight faults from round one after she posted a near picture perfect round, looking set to be the first clear of the night before having an unfortunate run out at the last fence and incurring a further four time penalties. However, coming back for round two, she wasn’t making any mistakes this time and posted a beautiful clear round to leave her on a total of eight faults.

Despite the clear jumping and good time of 64.07, with nine top combinations to follow, four of which were sitting on clear rounds, you still might not have picked Rose and My Super Nova as the eventual winners. However, as the rails continued to fall, including two 12 fault rounds, an elimination and a retirement from the four previously sitting on clean slates, Rose and My Super Nova took home the winner’s spoils, including $5,000 in prize money!
